Intentions Not Resolutions

So it is 2016. How’s it going so far?

A brand new year seems like the perfect time to take stock, and hit the reset button on the parts of our life or personality that could use a little revision (or maybe a major reconstruction).

And so some eager beavers make revolutionary resolutions. Usually a short-lived set up for failure, I fear. So, not one to pursue false hope, I have abandoned resolution-making for intention-setting.

So if you would like to, too, here’s how: you think up one word that sums up your intention. You’ll want to carefully considered this before committing to something to live by for the next 365 (well, 363 to be exact) days—I take my mother’s approach of not rushing into things. So take your time, January is a long month.

I thought about Joy because happiness is always a worthy pursuit, but I am not unhappy. Love is obvious; but I am surrounded by a man and two children who love me, and whom I love to bits. I’ve done Simplify over the years, and Abundance, too. I think I’ve gotten the Balance between the two. Hmmm….what is a woman of a certain age to set her intentions on?

So finally, drum roll, I’ve chosen Appreciate.

What I mean by this is that I wish to appreciate the people in my life; go for a walk everyday to appreciate the beautiful place where I live; value and use the beautiful things I surround myself with—wear my beautiful clothes even though I live in the middle of nowhere, carry a smart handbag always, read the stack of books beside my bed; and cook from my towering cookbook collection, and sew my fabric stash.

Believe it or not, this blog is a concrete way of appreciating my life. It allows me to do what I love—writing, photography—and express what I am passionate about—fashion, food, wine, handbags, et al.
